A kitchen designed for your home, not adapted to fit it.

Direct Kitchens has been designing and building custom kitchens across Melbourne since 1985, in our own Bayswater factory. Every one is drawn for the room it goes into.

A designer visits your home and prepares a design and an itemised price. No cost, no obligation.

Our story

A family business that never stopped making things itself

Direct Kitchens started in 1985 building custom cabinetry for boutique builders across Melbourne. Working in existing homes taught us where renovations come unstuck, and it is rarely the cabinetry. It is the disruption, the waiting, and the number of people you end up chasing.

So we built the business around that problem. We make our own cabinetry instead of ordering it in. One designer stays with you the whole way. We coordinate every trade ourselves. And we tell you the production timeline before you order, not after.

Nothing is square in an old Melbourne home. That is the difference between cabinets that line up and cabinets padded out with filler.

What makes us different

Four things that change how the job runs

Most kitchen companies sell you cabinetry and leave the rest to you. These are the differences you feel once the work starts.

01A honed stone benchtop edge in a classic cream kitchenMade to measure

We make it ourselves

Designed and built in our own Bayswater factory. Nothing is ordered in from a third party and reinterpreted along the way. You can visit and watch your kitchen being made.

Custom means custom

Every kitchen is designed for the space it is going into, not adapted from standard sizes. In older Melbourne homes that is the difference between cabinets that line up and cabinets padded out with filler.

One designer, start to finish

The designer who sits in your kitchen on day one is the same person you deal with through selections, ordering and installation. You are never handed off to someone new.

We run the trades

Rip-out, plumbing, electrical, plastering, carpentry, tiling, splashbacks and waste removal. We coordinate all of it, because sequencing six trades around a household that still needs to eat is the part that goes wrong.

The process

What happens, and when

No surprises. Every project follows the same five steps.

01

Showroom visit

See full-scale displays, handle the finishes and open the drawers. Our consultants walk you through materials and storage.

02

In-home consultation

A designer visits, measures properly and works through layout and ideas with you. No obligation attached.

Free

03

Design and pricing

Your kitchen is drawn up and priced line by line, so you see exactly what each part costs.

Itemised

04

Check measure and build

A technical advisor remeasures and confirms plans in your home, then production runs in our Bayswater factory.

6 to 8 weeks

05

Installation

Our own installers fit the kitchen with trades sequenced around them. Our service team stays available afterwards.

Good questions

Questions people ask

Is the design consultation really free?

Yes. A designer comes to your home, measures the space, discusses what you want and prepares a design and price. There is no charge and no obligation to proceed.

How long does a kitchen take?

Production runs approximately six to eight weeks in our Bayswater factory once your design is confirmed and check-measured. Installation is scheduled after that, and your project manager gives you the dates in advance.

Do you handle the trades, or do I need to organise them?

We handle them. Rip-out, plumbing, electrical, plastering, carpentry, tiling, splashbacks and waste removal are all coordinated by us. You can choose which ones you want us to take on.

Where is the cabinetry made?

In our own factory at 1 Power Rd, Bayswater. It is also a showroom, so you are welcome to visit and see how your kitchen is put together.

Do you work in my area?

We service Melbourne and Greater Melbourne. If you are not sure whether you are in range, put your suburb in the form and we will tell you.

What does a custom kitchen cost?

It depends entirely on the size of the room, the finishes and how much cabinetry is involved, so we will not quote a figure before seeing the space. Most of our kitchens sit somewhere between $30,000 and $80,000 including installation. Your designer gives you an itemised price so you can see what each part costs.

Do I need to know what I want before I book?

No. Most people come to us with a room they are unhappy with and a rough idea. Working that out is the designer’s job, and it is what the consultation is for. Bring photos, measurements or Pinterest boards if you have them, and nothing at all if you do not.

What happens after I enquire?

One of our showroom consultants calls you for a quick chat about the project, then books a time for a designer to visit. The designer measures your home, works through layout and ideas with you, and prepares a design and an itemised price.

If a new kitchen is something you have been putting off, the consultation costs nothing and gives you a real design and a real price to work from, whether you go ahead now or later.
