1985: The year it all started
Way back in 1985, the median house price in Victoria was $75,000; the Mutijulu Aboriginal community was given freehold title to Uluru and Kata Tjuta; Back to the Future was on at the cinema; and a small family business started manufacturing and providing custom made kitchens and cabinetry to boutique builders across Melbourne. That burgeoning business was, of course, Direct Kitchens, and for the past 38 years, we have been at the cutting edge of kitchen design in Victoria.
Way back then, with the aid of our small kitchen showroom, we began to see a need for custom design and high-quality cabinetry in the kitchen renovation market and started to develop a unique system to cater for customers in existing homes. We recognised that ensuring the least amount of disruption during the kitchen renovation process was paramount for our customers. This dedication to our client’s comfort and convenience has been our business touchstone ever since.
2023: Celebrating 38 years of custom kitchen experience
Although we still provide kitchens and cabinetry to boutique contractors and owner-builders, over the years, the kitchen renovation market has progressively become our focus. We have fine-tuned our unique process to ensure our customers enjoy a consistently high level of service every step of the way – from first contact through the design process to those final touches to a dream kitchen.
We have been proud to design and build kitchen cabinetry in all styles, ranging from the complete cabinetry needed for brand-new homes, full kitchen renovations for existing homes, complete bathroom renovations and architectural development projects. We’re also incredibly proud of our two kitchen showrooms – in Moonee Ponds and Bayswater – that allow our customers to see, feel and discover the possible styles, finishes and accessories available and to experience the quality of our workmanship.

When it all comes down to it, a kitchen is not ‘this tap or that tap, this shelf or that cupboard’ but an overall feeling of cohesion, efficiency, and convenience.
